The Petroleum Training Institute, Effurun, Delta State, is set to partner Laser Engineering and Resources Consultants in a move aimed at strengthening practical training and addressing skill gaps in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.
The development followed a courtesy visit by a delegation from Laser Engineering to the institute’s management on Wednesday, signalling plans for a strategic collaboration between both organisations.
The visiting team was led by the Managing Director of Laser Engineering, Prof. Mike Onyekonwu, while the PTI management was represented by the Director of Research and Development, Dr (Mrs.) Tina Isichei, on behalf of the Principal and Chief Executive, Dr Samuel Onoji.
The proposed partnership is expected to focus on hands-on training designed to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and industry practice, with initial attention on drilling and process production.
Speaking during the meeting, Isichei highlighted PTI’s long-standing reputation in the oil and gas sector, noting that its graduates have continued to make significant impact both within and outside Nigeria.
“Regular visits to oil and gas establishments confirm that PTI alumni are consistently present, showcasing broad industry integration,” she said.
She added, “This legacy builds a strong brand credibility that supports partnerships and collaboration opportunities. Training as the core mission with diverse programs including student education and professional development.”
On his part, Onyekonwu said the partnership would enable his organisation to leverage PTI’s expertise and facilities to enhance industry-focused training.
“Laser Engineering came to see the facilities in PTI and to see how we can leverage on the vast expertise of the Institute to enable us service the industry and to make returns as well. To be candid, the facilities we have seen so far is beyond our imagination, PTI is a goldmine in terms of facilities and expertise,” he said.
He noted that the collaboration would combine Laser Engineering’s practical solutions with PTI’s training infrastructure to produce industry-ready professionals.
“This partnership represents a synergy of expertise. Laser Engineering’s cutting-edge solutions, combined with PTI’s renowned training infrastructure, will empower the next generation of Nigerian engineers and technicians,” he added.
Also speaking, PTI’s Director of Engineering, Dr Ahmed Adamu, assured the visiting team of the institute’s capacity to support the collaboration, stressing its consistent delivery on training and retraining mandates.
Earlier, the Head of Linkages, Exchange and Partnerships at PTI, Dr (Mrs.) Sarah Nwinee, said the engagement reflected a mutual commitment to deepen collaboration and develop innovative training opportunities.
She noted that both organisations were expected to formalise the partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding, adding that the initiative would enhance workforce development and improve industry readiness among graduates.
The visit featured a tour of PTI’s facilities, including its rig and flow station as well as the PVT laboratory.
