A suspected leader of the Buccaneers confraternity in Surulere, Lagos State, Adedipe Adeyinkan, popularly known as Yinka Agali, has been shot dead by yet-to-be-identified assailants.
The incident was said to have occurred on Saturday night in the Iponri area of Surulere, where the deceased was reportedly a prominent figure within the group.
It was gathered that Adeyinkan was attacked while driving along the Iponri axis. While some sources linked the killing to a possible clash between rival cult groups, others speculated that it might not be unconnected with political tensions ahead of forthcoming local government elections.
Unverified videos circulating on social media also alleged a connection between the deceased and the All Progressives Congress, though there has been no official confirmation of such claims.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Command disclosed that it received a distress call about gunshots at about 11:30 p.m. near the National Stadium Bridge, inward Iponri.
A patrol team from the Surulere Division was subsequently deployed to the scene, where the victim was found inside an unregistered white Mercedes-Benz GLE 350 with multiple gunshot injuries.
The police said the victim was immediately rushed to the Mainland General Hospital, Yaba, where he was confirmed dead. His remains were later deposited in a morgue for autopsy.
Further findings revealed that the attackers abandoned an unregistered black Ford Edge at the scene before fleeing in another vehicle. Both vehicles have since been recovered by the police.
The command added that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
It was also disclosed that the family of the deceased had retrieved his body and indicated that it would not pursue the case further.
