Tragedy as mother commits suicide after baby drowns in bucket

Tragedy struck a family in Bengaluru, India, as a 29-year-old woman reportedly took her own life shortly after her 11-month-old son accidentally drowned in a bucket at their residence.

The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, involved Pratibha, a software professional, who was alone at home with her child while her husband, Mahantesh, was away at work.

It was gathered that the woman had briefly gone to the terrace to retrieve dried clothes, leaving the child unattended. During that period, the infant, identified as Agastya, reportedly crawled into the washing area and fell into a bucket filled with water.

On returning, Pratibha was said to have discovered the lifeless body of her son.

Police sources disclosed that the distraught mother subsequently took drastic steps, including inflicting injuries on herself, ingesting tablets and eventually hanging herself.

Her husband reportedly returned home around 6:30 p.m. to find the door locked from the inside. Using a spare key, he gained entry and discovered the bodies of both his wife and child.

Authorities said a suicide note was recovered at the scene alongside an empty pack of tablets.

In the note, the woman reportedly blamed herself for the child’s death, explaining that the incident occurred during her brief absence from the room. She also indicated that she had initially attempted to end her life through other means before resorting to hanging.

Police added that the family had resided in the rented apartment for about four years.

A case has been opened, while investigations are ongoing.
