The United States Mission in Nigeria has cautioned that visa overstays by Nigerian travellers could have wider implications for other applicants seeking entry into the country.
In a statement shared on Monday via its official X handle, the mission urged Nigerians to adhere strictly to U.S. immigration regulations, stressing that compliance is key to sustaining fair access for genuine travellers.
It noted that when visitors exceed the duration of their visas or breach entry conditions, it may influence how future applications from the same country are assessed.
According to the mission, such violations could limit opportunities for Nigerians travelling for legitimate purposes, including education, business, tourism and family visits.
“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens. Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers and families who travel responsibly,” the statement read.
The mission also raised concerns over visa fraud and the misuse of travel documents, describing them as serious offences that undermine the integrity of the immigration system.
It called on members of the public to assist in curbing such practices by reporting credible cases of visa fraud through designated consular channels.
Reaffirming its commitment to fostering safe and lawful travel between both countries, the mission stressed that adherence to immigration rules would help ensure that compliant applicants are not disadvantaged by the actions of others.
