The Nigeria Democratic Congress has zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term, clearing the path for former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, and other southern aspirants to contest under the party’s platform.
The decision was reached during the party’s National Convention after delegates unanimously adopted a motion moved by Afam Victor Ogene, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State.
The motion, which received overwhelming support from delegates, also stipulated that the party’s presidential ticket would automatically return to Northern Nigeria after the completion of the proposed four-year tenure.
The development is expected to strengthen Obi’s chances ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, following his recent defection to the NDC.
Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, who also recently joined the party, is equally being tipped as a major contender for the NDC presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general election.
Political observers believe the zoning arrangement may shape the internal dynamics of the party as it prepares for the next presidential race.
