The Director-General of Media and Publicity at the Kano Government House, Sunusi Tofa, has alleged that the presidential ambition of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, may ultimately favour President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.
Tofa made the claim on Wednesday during an appearance on a television programme while speaking on political realignments ahead of the next general elections.
According to him, ongoing political engagements involving key opposition figures could indirectly strengthen Tinubu’s chances of securing a second term in office.
He said, “Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is indirectly or strategically working towards President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid. There are political activities and strategic engagements already taking place ahead of 2027, and many of them will eventually favour President Tinubu.”
The government spokesperson also claimed that Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, had allegedly approached Tinubu over plans to defect to the All Progressives Congress with Kwankwaso’s approval.
He added that the purported move was also supported by a former Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Gwarzo.
Tofa further stated that the political environment in Kano could pose challenges for the presidential ambition of former Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi.
According to him, political acceptance in the state is largely influenced by ideological and regional considerations.
The aide also dismissed reports claiming that millions of supporters attended a recent gathering at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, describing the figures as exaggerated.
“Even major public venues in Kano do not have such capacity. Kwankwaso’s residence cannot accommodate more than 2,000 people,” he said.
Efforts to get a reaction from Kwankwaso were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
Kwankwaso, a former governor of Kano State and presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in the 2023 election, remains a major political force in the North-West through the Kwankwasiyya movement.
His political structure was widely credited with helping Governor Yusuf secure victory in the 2023 governorship election in Kano State.
However, recent political developments have fuelled speculations of a growing rift between the former governor and the incumbent administration over governance and political direction in the state.
