Tragedy struck in Akure, the Ondo State capital, on Wednesday after a truck reportedly rammed into vehicles and crushed two brothers riding on a motorcycle to death along Reuben Fasoranti Road.
The fatal accident occurred near the headquarters of the Vehicle Inspection Office in the Alagbaka area of the state capital.
The deceased, said to be middle-aged men, were reportedly fruit sellers operating around Iyeoma Plaza before the incident.
A commercial driver who narrowly escaped the accident said the truck suddenly lost control and crashed into vehicles and motorcycles trapped in traffic.
According to eyewitnesses, officials of the Vehicle Inspection Office were conducting a routine stop-and-check exercise on motorists when the incident happened, causing heavy congestion along the road.
Speaking with journalists, the commercial driver said he had parked his vehicle to deliver goods when he heard loud screams from passersby.
He said, “I came to deliver goods to my boss, but the shop was not yet open, so I parked by the roadside. As I wanted to offload the goods, I suddenly heard people shouting.
“When I turned back, I saw the truck crashing into vehicles and motorcycles. I immediately ran for safety. The two men on the motorcycle died on the spot.”
The impact of the crash also left several vehicles damaged.
Police officers from the Ijapo Division later arrived at the scene and evacuated the corpses to a morgue.
The incident, however, sparked outrage among residents and sympathisers, who blamed the traffic situation caused by the enforcement operation for the tragedy.
Angry youths reportedly attempted to confront officials at the VIO office before security operatives intervened to restore calm in the area.
