No fewer than 30 people were killed after suspected bandits ambushed travellers along the Magami–Dansadau highway in Zamfara State.
The attack, described as one of the deadliest on the route this year, reportedly occurred between Magami and Gusau when the gunmen opened fire on moving vehicles in a coordinated assault targeting motorists and commuters.
Confirming the incident on Monday, the spokesman for the Zamfara Community Protection Guard, Malam Abubakar Gummi, said the victims included civilians, local hunters, and a member of the community protection outfit.
According to him, “21 civilians, eight local hunters, and one community protection guard were killed in the assault.”
Gummi disclosed that security operatives and community guards later engaged the attackers in a gun duel following the ambush.
He added that several bandits were reportedly killed during the exchange, although he did not provide details of the casualties recorded among the attackers.
The Magami–Dansadau highway has for years remained a major hotspot for bandit attacks in Zamfara South, with travellers, farmers, and traders frequently targeted by armed groups operating in the area.
The road serves as a major link between rural communities and Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, making it a critical route for transportation and commercial activities despite persistent insecurity.
Security sources said the bodies of the victims had been evacuated to nearby health facilities, while injured survivors were receiving treatment for varying degrees of injuries sustained during the attack.
As of the time of filing this report, the Zamfara State Government had yet to release an official statement on the incident.
