Former Vice President and presidential aspirant of the African Democratic Congress, Atiku Abubakar, has declared that democracy has come to stay in Nigeria following the conduct of the party’s presidential primary election across the country.
Atiku made the remark on Monday after casting his vote at the Ajiya Ward polling unit in Jimeta, Yola, Adamawa State, during the ADC presidential primary held simultaneously in 8,809 wards across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
The former Vice President arrived at the venue to a warm reception from party supporters and members who turned out in large numbers to participate in the exercise.
Speaking shortly after voting, Atiku said the turnout of party faithful reflected growing confidence in the internal democratic process of the ADC.
“The large turnout of voters is a clear indication of how party members are willing to participate in the ADC internal democratic processes,” he said.
“I have no doubt that democracy has come to stay,” the former presidential candidate added.
Atiku, who is one of the three aspirants contesting the ADC presidential ticket alongside former Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, and Mohammed Hayatudeen, joined other party members on the queue before casting his ballot.
Earlier, the returning officer for the election in Ajiya Ward, Umar Jada, announced the unanimous endorsement of Atiku’s candidature by party members in the ward.
The voting exercise later concluded with 3,220 votes reportedly cast in favour of the former Vice President.
