Suspected armed bandits in the early hours of Monday launched a coordinated attack on the Yashikira Police Divisional Headquarters and the palace of the Emir of Yashikira in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, abducting 10 residents in the process.
The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, noting that the attackers struck around 2:00 a.m. in a carefully coordinated operation.
According to the police, the assailants also set part of the Emir’s palace on fire during the invasion, causing panic in the community.
The statement, however, said police operatives stationed at the divisional headquarters successfully repelled the attack on the police facility, preventing further destruction.
It added that the attackers succeeded in abducting 10 persons before escaping into nearby forested areas.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ojo Adekimi, ordered a joint security operation involving police tactical units, forest guards and local vigilante groups to track down the attackers and rescue the kidnapped victims.
“The Command is already taking decisive steps in collaboration with other security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted victims and arrest of the perpetrators,” the statement quoted the Commissioner as saying.
CP Adekimi reportedly vowed that the command would intensify efforts to rid the state of criminal elements threatening peace and security.
“These criminals have declared war on peaceful communities, but we are fully prepared to hunt them down and bring them to justice,” he added.
Security patrols have since been intensified in the affected area as efforts continue to restore calm and prevent further attacks in Kaiama and adjoining communities.
