The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested seven suspected armed thugs allegedly linked to a serving member of the House of Representatives over an alleged plot to disrupt the All Progressives Congress primary election in the state.
The state Commissioner of Police, Falade Adegoroye Michael, disclosed this on Friday while addressing journalists in Ado Ekiti.
According to the police boss, the suspects were apprehended around 9pm on Thursday at Onikoyi Hotel in Ikun-Ekiti following intelligence reports about the arrival of armed men in the state.
The suspects were identified as Adekunle Stephen, Boluwaji Ishola, Adepoju Adebayo, Oluwatobi Adeoluwa, Akintunde Emmanuel, Ibitola Babatope and Adewale Makanjuola, while several others reportedly escaped in three vehicles.
Falade described the suspects as armed hoodlums and said security operatives recovered dangerous items from them during the operation.
Items recovered, according to him, included one Beretta pistol, two pump-action guns, nine rounds of 9mm live ammunition, four cartridges, substances suspected to be charms, two Apple laptops and a Honda Accord car.
The police commissioner added that the suspects allegedly confessed to being political thugs recruited by a serving federal lawmaker to destabilise the APC primary election initially fixed for Friday, May 15, 2026.
He assured residents that the suspects would be prosecuted, adding that efforts were ongoing to arrest fleeing members of the gang as well as their alleged sponsor.
Meanwhile, the APC primary election earlier scheduled for Friday was later shifted to Saturday, May 16, 2026.
