A former senator representing Ekiti Central, Babafemi Ojudu, has recounted the internal crisis that rocked the All Progressives Congress in Ekiti State during the administration of former Governor Kayode Fayemi.
Ojudu, while reflecting on the political developments within the party in 2020, said disagreements between some party leaders and the Fayemi-led administration created serious tension within the APC in the state.
The former lawmaker disclosed that he and some political associates openly criticised the administration at the time, a move he claimed triggered attempts to force them out of the party.
According to him, ward executives were allegedly pressured to collect signatures to facilitate their expulsion from the APC.
He added that notable party figures, including former senator Tony Adeniyi, former House of Representatives member Oyetunde Ojo and ex-lawmaker Bimbo Daramola, were also affected during the crisis.
Ojudu further alleged that the chairman of his ward, identified as Clement Afolabi, was threatened, arrested and detained for refusing to support efforts aimed at removing him from the party.
He said the situation later escalated, prompting his camp to announce the suspension of Fayemi from the party.
“In response, we moved to suspend the governor himself and publicised the action widely. Matters escalated dangerously until the national leadership of the party intervened and appealed to both sides to sheath their swords,” he stated.
The former senator also alleged that security agencies were later involved over accusations bordering on criminal libel.
He, however, noted that their legal representatives challenged the move.
