Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress, attributing his decision to escalating internal wrangling and what he described as a hostile political environment.
Obi disclosed his exit in a statement shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, where he decried the increasingly “toxic” nature of the nation’s political space and the pressures faced by public office holders.
The former Anambra State governor, however, clarified that his decision was not borne out of personal disagreements with key figures in the party, including its National Chairman, David Mark, or former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, both of whom he said he holds in high regard.
He explained that persistent internal disputes, legal battles and external interference had created an atmosphere of uncertainty within the party, similar to the challenges he previously encountered in the Labour Party Nigeria.
“The same forces that created instability and crises in my former political platform appear to be resurfacing here,” Obi stated, expressing concern over recurring divisions and litigations.
According to him, the lingering issues had continued to distract from meaningful engagement on national development, while fostering suspicion among party members.
Obi also lamented what he described as a political culture that often misconstrues integrity, humility and service as weakness, noting that individuals acting in good faith are frequently subjected to criticism and misrepresentation.
He added that despite his contributions, he and his associates were sometimes treated as outsiders within the political space.
Reiterating his commitment to national progress, Obi stressed that his political aspiration had never been driven by the pursuit of power, but by a desire to build a functional and equitable society.
“I am not desperate for any political office, but committed to seeing a Nigeria that works for all,” he said.
Despite his exit from the ADC, Obi affirmed his continued dedication to the country’s development, expressing optimism that Nigeria could still achieve leadership anchored on justice, equity and compassion.
