A member of the National Youth Service Corps, Akomolafe Temitayo Daniel, has recorded remarkable achievements through community development initiatives focused on educational support and youth empowerment in Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The projects, executed under the Community Development Service programme, targeted indigent students and young people through educational assistance and practical skill acquisition aimed at promoting self-reliance and economic sustainability.
One of the projects involved the distribution of academic materials to vulnerable students at Ayegunle High School.
The outreach programme was attended by the Local Government Inspector of the NYSC, alongside members of the school management, including the principal and vice principal.
Speaking during the presentation, Akomolafe described the initiative as part of a broader vision of building a sustainable community through meaningful educational support.
According to him, the decision to focus on indigent students rather than only high-performing students was intentional.
“The brilliant students should be celebrated, but those without resources also deserve support,” he said.
It was gathered that the school management already had a documented register of indigent students. The principal reportedly sought clarification on whether the beneficiaries would be selected based on academic performance or financial need, to which the corps member insisted that priority should be given to indigent students.
Following the selection process, 30 students from JSS1 to SS2 were picked from the school’s indigent register with the support of the vice principal.
Items distributed to the students included calculators, notebooks and mathematical sets tailored to their academic needs.
Reflecting on the exercise, the corps member noted that many of the students, despite their financial challenges, appeared neat and well-presented.
“Seven out of every 10 students looked very neat. You could hardly tell what they were going through by their appearance,” he stated.
The initiative, according to stakeholders, underscored the need to restore hope and dignity to vulnerable students through targeted educational support.
Delivering the vote of thanks, the school’s Senior Head Girl expressed appreciation on behalf of the students and management for selecting the school as a beneficiary of the project.
The school principal also commended the initiative and assured the corps member that the gesture would remain part of the institution’s history.
“Your name will never be forgotten in the history of this school as long as it exists,” the principal said while requesting the corps member’s details for the school’s records.
The outreach programme has continued to attract commendation from residents and members of the school community, who described it as timely and impactful.
In a related development, the corps member also organised a free SkillUp Bootcamp for graduates and undergraduates across Akoko South West Local Government Area.
Out of 73 registered participants, 33 youths were trained in practical and digital skills, including basic data analysis, content writing and publishing, as well as shoe making.
The bootcamp was designed to equip participants with employable and entrepreneurial skills capable of improving productivity and self-development.
Participants who completed the training received digital and printed certificates signed by the Local Government Inspector and presented by the Registrar and Bursar of Sam Maris University, who represented the Vice Chancellor, Francis A. Gbore.
Certificates of Volunteer Service were also presented to facilitators, including HeartJhay Footwears for shoe-making training and Adinnu Jeremiah for content writing and publishing sessions.
Speaking at the event, the Registrar of Sam Maris University, David Daramola, praised the corps member for initiating the programme.
“This is the first time corps members are organising an initiative of this nature within the institution’s environment, and it is highly commendable,” he said.
Community members and education stakeholders have since applauded the projects, describing them as strong examples of purposeful leadership, youth-driven development and sustainable community impact.
