The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a suspected kidnapper and the personal driver of an Anglican bishop over the alleged killing of the cleric and theft of his Toyota Land Cruiser SUV.
The suspects were apprehended after reportedly attempting to sell the stolen vehicle in Anambra State.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Ikioye Orutugu, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday while addressing journalists at the command headquarters.
According to the police commissioner, the suspects had only recently been taken into custody and investigations were ongoing to unravel the full details surrounding the incident.
Although the identity of the slain cleric was not fully disclosed, sources identified him simply as Bishop Chinedu, said to be based in Delta State.
It was gathered that the bishop’s driver allegedly conspired with kidnappers to dispossess the cleric of his vehicle, but the operation reportedly turned deadly after the bishop was killed during the attack.
The stolen Toyota Land Cruiser SUV was thereafter allegedly moved to Anambra State for sale.
Orutugu disclosed that one of the suspects was arrested while trying to negotiate the sale of the vehicle with a prospective buyer.
“They brought the vehicle into Anambra to sell, and the man seen with him was the intended buyer. In the process, they were arrested,” the police commissioner said.
Police operatives, however, prevented journalists from interacting with the suspects, insisting that investigations were still at a preliminary stage.
The command assured the public that further details would be made available after the conclusion of investigations.
