Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has alleged that there is a covert attempt by security operatives to manipulate audio and video recordings connected to the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir el-Rufai, in a move he claims is aimed at undermining his reputation and justifying his continued custody.
In a statement issued on Friday, Frank alleged that the former governor has been placed under stringent surveillance while in detention, with private conversations involving his lawyers and family members reportedly being monitored and recorded without consent.
He further claimed that officials of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, where el-Rufai is allegedly being held, are working in collaboration with operatives of the Department of State Services to bug his environment and capture extensive audio-visual material.
According to him, the recordings are being sifted through for portions that could be digitally altered.
“Nasir el-Rufai has been subjected to intense surveillance even in detention,” Frank was quoted as saying.
He alleged further that security operatives had amassed hours of recordings of the former governor’s interactions with legal representatives and relatives, which are now being reviewed for possible manipulation.
Frank also claimed that artificial intelligence tools could be deployed to distort selected clips, which may later be released to the media to portray el-Rufai in a negative light.
“The plan is to use AI to distort some of these recordings to frame el-Rufai. Their plan is to then leak some of these doctored recordings to the press,” he alleged.
He maintained that the purported scheme forms part of what he described as a wider effort to discredit the former governor and extend his detention period, insisting that the development is politically motivated.
