The Federal Road Safety Corps in Ondo State has warned motorists against indiscriminate parking on highways, saying the practice remains a major cause of road crashes and traffic obstruction.
The Ondo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Dr Samuel Ibitoye, issued the warning on Thursday during the command’s Community Social Responsibility programme held in the Shasha area of Akure.
Ibitoye said the two-day exercise formed part of the corps’ nationwide efforts aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing accidents on major roads.
According to him, the initiative was designed to sensitise motorists and other road users on the importance of maintaining free movement on highways.
He explained that the exercise also involved the removal of abandoned and broken-down vehicles obstructing traffic, as well as other activities intended to make roads safer for commuters.
The sector commander said the command had embarked on clearing obstructions, filling potholes, cutting overgrown trees affecting visibility and clearing drainage channels to ensure smooth vehicular movement.
“We have removed broken-down vehicles on the highways to allow smooth movement and reduce avoidable crashes.
“We are equally removing anything capable of obstructing traffic flow, including filling potholes, trimming trees causing visibility challenges and clearing gutters for proper water passage,” he said.
Ibitoye noted that the FRSC was not only focused on enforcement and sanctions but also committed to initiatives that would positively impact road users.
He added that the ultimate goal of the exercise was to reduce accidents, ease traffic congestion and demonstrate the corps’ commitment to public safety.
The sector commander, however, warned motorists who habitually park indiscriminately on highways to desist from the act or risk prosecution.
A motorist, Mr Kolade Ogundare, commended the FRSC for the initiative and urged the corps to sustain the exercise across major highways in the state.
