How bandits kidnapped ex-defence spokesman, Maj-Gen Abubakar, wife

A retired senior military officer, Major General Rabe Abubakar, and his wife have been abducted by suspected kidnappers in Katsina State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday while the former Director of Defence Information and his spouse were travelling through the Katsina-Matazu axis.

Sources familiar with the development said the couple's journey was cut short when armed attackers intercepted their vehicle in Matazu Local Government Area and forcefully took them away.

The assailants were said to have attacked the vehicle and dragged the victims into captivity, leaving their whereabouts unknown as of the time of filing this report.

It was further learnt that the driver accompanying the couple sustained gunshot injuries during the attack but managed to escape from the scene.

Abubakar, a retired Major General, previously served as the face of the Nigerian military's public communication efforts and was actively involved in disseminating information on defence operations during his years in service.

The latest abduction has once again drawn attention to the security challenges confronting communities and road users in Katsina and other parts of the North-West, where criminal gangs continue to carry out kidnappings and violent attacks.

Despite repeated military offensives against armed groups operating in the region, residents have continued to express concerns over recurring incidents of abduction on major roads and within rural settlements.

The kidnapping of the retired military officer and his wife is expected to further intensify calls for stronger security measures to safeguard lives and property across the state.

Efforts to obtain an official response from military authorities on the incident were unsuccessful as of press time.
