Fresh revelations have emerged on how Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, allegedly lost the support of President Bola Tinubu and the leadership of the All Progressives Congress in the lingering political battle with his predecessor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Sources within the APC said Fubara fell out with the Presidency and party leaders after allegedly reneging on agreements reached during reconciliation efforts aimed at ending the Rivers crisis.
A senior APC official, who spoke anonymously, claimed Tinubu had advised Fubara to focus on governance and stay away from confrontation with Wike, adding that part of the peace deal reached during earlier impeachment threats was that the governor would not seek a second term.
According to the source, the APC leadership refused to openly back Fubara after his defection to the party because he lacked Wike’s endorsement.
“The political structure of Rivers was handed to Wike. The party already understood the President’s body language, which was why Fubara was not officially received into the APC,” the source said.
Another APC chieftain alleged that Fubara was not cleared by the party’s governorship screening committee, claiming his withdrawal from the race was a “face-saving move.”
A loyalist of Wike also maintained that the APC was merely enforcing an earlier agreement allegedly reached with the governor.
Fubara defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in December 2025 but, unlike other defecting governors, was not accorded a formal reception by the ruling party.
Meanwhile, some South-South leaders and youth groups have expressed disappointment over the governor’s withdrawal from the 2027 governorship race, urging him to reconsider his decision.
