Residents of the Hotoro area of Kano metropolis in Kano State were thrown into panic after a woman allegedly set her co-wife and two children on fire during a domestic dispute.
The incident occurred late night in the Mai Allo area of Hotoro quarters, leaving the victims with severe burns.
The victims, identified as 28-year-old Firdausi Musa and her children, Khadija Ya’u, 7, and Ismail Ya’u, 3, were reportedly drenched with petrol and set ablaze by the suspect, identified as Maryam Muhammad.
The children and their mother are currently receiving treatment at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala, and Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.
Their husband and father, Malam Saminu, also reportedly sustained injuries while attempting to rescue them from the fire.
The suspect is currently being held at the Mariri Police Division following the incident, which has sparked outrage within the community.
Speaking on the development, Firdausi’s younger brother, Buhari Musa Sa’ad, said the family received a distress call around 3am informing them that his sister and her family had been attacked.
According to him, Firdausi had spent less than two weeks in the matrimonial home before the incident occurred.
“She is about 28 years old. The children who were burned are from her previous marriage and are the husband’s stepchildren. The man works as a tricycle operator,” he said.
A relative of the victim, identified simply as Rukayya, alleged that Firdausi had previously complained about threats and intimidation from her co-wife before the attack.
“We were around when she was brought here, and she personally told us that it was her co-wife who poured petrol on her and set her ablaze,” she said.
Rukayya further disclosed that the victim had briefly left the house earlier in the day following repeated threats, but later returned after intervention from her husband.
Attempts to get a response from the Kano State Police Command were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
