Tragedy struck in the Guzape area of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, after a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps allegedly stabbed his father to death during a heated altercation at their residence.
The deceased, identified as Adimike Godwin, was said to be a prominent businessman and member of the Electrical Dealers Association of Nigeria.
Sources familiar with the incident disclosed that the 53-year-old businessman, who reportedly owned properties in Abuja and Lagos, had travelled to the nation’s capital to see his son, who was serving in Abuja and overseeing some of his father’s real estate interests.
According to sources within the traders’ association, the incident occurred after the corps member allegedly returned from a nightclub and confronted his father over financial matters.
The disagreement was said to have escalated into a violent confrontation during which the suspect allegedly stabbed the businessman multiple times.
A member of the association described the deceased as a major importer and respected figure in the electrical market, adding that the tragic news shocked members of the union.
The source said, “We received information that one of our members, a prominent dealer in the market, was involved in a tragic incident. He was a major importer and also involved in real estate business.
“We learnt that his son, who is currently serving in Abuja, returned home from a club and had an argument with his father over money and management of some business affairs.
“The disagreement later turned violent, and the young man allegedly stabbed his father several times. It is a very painful development for all of us.”
The source added that members of the association quickly secured the deceased’s shops and warehouses to prevent looting and safeguard his business assets.
“As a union, we immediately secured all his shops and warehouses to prevent anybody from taking away goods. That is usually the first step we take whenever such tragedy happens to one of our members,” the source added.
The suspect was reportedly arrested by the police, while the deceased’s wife was also invited for questioning as part of ongoing investigations.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, Josephine Adeh, said the matter was reported after concerned persons raised the alarm over their inability to reach the deceased.
She said, “The FCT Police Command is investigating the death of Mr. Adimike Godwin of Guzape, which was discovered following a distress call.
“Upon arrival at the scene, officers found the victim in a pool of blood. He was rushed to Karu General Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead.”
Adeh added that five suspects, including a relative of the deceased, had been taken into custody following directives from the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Muhammed Sanusi.
She noted that investigations were ongoing and appealed to members of the public to provide useful information that could assist the police in unraveling the circumstances surrounding the incident.
