Veteran Nollywood actor Dele Odule has revealed that he once contemplated death during a difficult period in his life, disclosing that he went as far as checking the price of a casket at the time.
The seasoned actor made the revelation in a recent interview, where he recounted a phase of deep frustration while living in Abeokuta.
According to him, the experience stemmed from feelings of stagnation and a loss of hope about his future in the movie industry.
Odule said he was accompanied by fellow actor Olaiya Igwe when he visited a casket seller, adding that the incident left his colleague emotional.
“I once went to check the price of my own coffin when my life was in disarray in Abeokuta. I had lost belief in myself and didn’t think I would succeed. Olaiya Igwe was with me, and he broke down in tears,” he said.
He explained that although he was not ill at the time, he felt overwhelmed by the lack of progress in his career, especially when compared to his peers.
The actor noted that many of his former schoolmates appeared to be doing better in life, which deepened his discouragement.
“I wasn’t sick, but I felt stuck. I believed I might never make it. Seeing my contemporaries succeed while I struggled made it worse,” he added.
Despite the bleak moment, Odule has since risen to prominence as one of the respected figures in the Yoruba film industry, with a career spanning several decades.
He has also played key leadership roles, including serving as president of the Theatre Arts and Movie Practitioners Association of Nigeria.
