The Ondo State Police Command has rescued 12 passengers abducted by suspected kidnappers along the Isua Akoko axis of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, disclosed this in a statement obtained by Veracity News on Saturday, saying the victims were rescued during a coordinated operation involving police operatives, local hunters and other security stakeholders.
According to the statement, the victims were kidnapped in the early hours of Friday after armed men intercepted two commercial Hummer buses travelling from Benue State to Ibadan and marched several passengers into a nearby forest.
Jimoh said the command received a distress call around 1:30am, prompting the immediate deployment of security personnel to the scene to rescue the victims and apprehend the attackers.
He explained that the joint security team carried out extensive bush-combing operations and intelligence-driven surveillance across the forests and surrounding terrains where the victims were believed to have been taken.
The police spokesperson added that sustained pressure from the operatives led to the rescue of 12 victims, including the drivers of the affected buses, noting that the victims were receiving medical attention and support before being reunited with their families.
He stated that efforts were ongoing to secure the release of other victims still in captivity, adding that additional tactical and intelligence assets had been deployed to strengthen the rescue and manhunt operations.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Felix Ohagwu, who visited the scene for an on-the-spot assessment, urged residents to support security agencies with timely information, assuring that the command would sustain its crackdown on kidnappers and other criminal elements across the state.
