Former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have formally joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress, signalling a major political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential poll on the platform of the Labour Party, and Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, were received into the party on Sunday at its national headquarters in Abuja.
The development followed Obi’s earlier announcement of his exit from the African Democratic Congress.
The two political figures are believed to be positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential race, with their move seen as part of broader consultations and coalition-building efforts.
They were welcomed by the National Leader of the party and former Bayelsa State Governor, Seriake Dickson, alongside the National Chairman, Moses Cleopas.
Party leaders described the development as a significant boost, noting that it reflects increasing confidence in the NDC across the country.
They expressed optimism that the entry of the two politicians would strengthen the party’s structure and expand its national appeal ahead of the next election cycle.
