The Ondo State Police Command has arrested two suspects in connection with the vandalisation and theft of electrical installations at the General Hospital, Igbotako.
The development was disclosed on Sunday in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
The suspects include one Promise Godspower, who allegedly broke into the hospital premises and tampered with electrical fittings, as well as a security guard, Pogbara Sigalo, who was also taken into custody over alleged negligence of duty.
The incident, which occurred on May 6, 2026, was reported by a concerned citizen who alerted the police that the suspect had unlawfully gained access into the hospital and removed electrical cables after vandalising installations within the facility.
Acting on the report, detectives were swiftly deployed to the scene where preliminary investigations were carried out. Evidence, including photographic documentation of the damaged installations, was also obtained.
Subsequently, operatives of the Command arrested the principal suspect based on credible intelligence. During interrogation, he reportedly confessed to the offence.
Further investigations revealed that the security guard on duty allegedly abandoned his post at the time of the incident, creating an opportunity for the crime to be committed. He was subsequently arrested for questioning over alleged dereliction of duty and possible complicity.
The police confirmed that the stolen electrical cables have been recovered, while investigations are ongoing to determine whether other accomplices were involved.
The Commissioner of Police, Ondo State Command, CP Adebowale Lawal, condemned the incident and expressed concern over the alleged negligence of the security personnel, warning that dereliction of duty poses serious risks to public infrastructure and safety.
He reiterated that all persons found culpable would be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations in accordance with the law.
CP Lawal also assured residents of the Command’s commitment to protecting public infrastructure and clamping down on vandalism and related crimes across the state.
The Command warned individuals against engaging in acts of vandalism, theft, and destruction of government property, stressing that such offences would be met with firm legal action.
Members of the public were also urged to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or security agency.
