Speaking on the incident, the deceased’s sister, Abigail Moshood, said Blessing stepped out around 8pm after speaking with someone over the phone.
She explained that about an hour later, the deceased contacted the family, informing them that she would briefly return home to pick up her phone charger which she had forgotten.
According to Abigail, the family became alarmed when Blessing stopped communicating and failed to return home the next day.
“We later heard residents discussing the discovery of a woman’s body inside a canal, and someone mentioned the hairstyle she had on, which matched my sister’s,” she said.
“My mother became distressed immediately, and we later learnt that officers from the Jikwoyi Police Station had evacuated the corpse to a mortuary in Mararaba. She was found half-naked with only a top on,” she added.
Abigail said she subsequently visited the police station, where officers showed her photographs of the recovered body, confirming it was her sister.
Residents of the area described the deceased as intelligent, peaceful and friendly.
A neighbour, identified simply as Margaret, said Blessing was admired in the community for her humility and academic excellence.
“I learnt she graduated with a Second Class Upper in Sociology. She was very brilliant and respectful. Everyone around here liked her,” she said.
Another resident, Abdullahi Musa, called on security agencies to intensify surveillance around the Jikwoyi axis, especially near the Jikwoyi Medical Centre area, where criminal activities such as phone snatching were allegedly common.
He urged the police to launch a thorough investigation to identify and arrest those responsible for the killing.
A police officer at the Jikwoyi Police Station, who spoke anonymously, confirmed that the matter was under investigation.
