Former President Goodluck Jonathan sparked laughter on Tuesday after referring to the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, as “my good friend” during a public event.
Jonathan made the remark while delivering his address as chairman at the presentation of “My Life of Duty and Allegiance,” the autobiography of former Head of State, Yakubu Gowon.
The comment immediately drew laughter from guests at the event, forcing the former president to briefly pause his speech before continuing.
Jonathan and Sanusi had a frosty relationship during the latter’s tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Their rift followed allegations made by Sanusi before the Senate Committee on Finance on February 13, 2014, where he claimed that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation failed to remit about $20bn to the Federation Account.
The allegation triggered widespread political controversy and intensified tensions between the then President and the CBN governor.
Jonathan later suspended Sanusi from office, citing allegations of financial recklessness and misconduct.
Months after his suspension, Sanusi was appointed Emir of Kano by the administration of former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, following the death of Emir Ado Bayero.
