The National Publicity Secretary of the African Democratic Congress, Bolaji Abdullahi, has faulted reports that former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, may leave the party over ongoing legal issues, describing such a move as unwarranted.
Abdullahi, who spoke during an interview on ARISE News, said it would be inconsistent for Obi to consider exiting the party, recalling that the former Anambra State governor had previously warned against opposition fragmentation ahead of the 2027 elections.
He noted that presenting multiple candidates against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would only enhance the ruling party’s chances at the polls.
“Obi himself had stated that if the opposition fields more than one candidate, it would give the APC an advantage. It is therefore surprising that he would contemplate leaving under the current circumstances,” Abdullahi said.
The ADC spokesman maintained that the opposition coalition built around the party had continued to gain traction despite internal challenges and legal battles.
He argued that walking away at this stage would undermine efforts to build a united front capable of challenging the All Progressives Congress in the next general election.
According to him, the coalition was founded on strong public support and designed to withstand political pressures, including legal disputes.
Abdullahi urged political stakeholders within the opposition to remain committed to the broader goal of unity, rather than pursuing individual ambitions that could weaken the collective strength needed to unseat the ruling party in 2027.
