A businessman, Auwal Musa, has approached a Sharia Court in Kaduna State, seeking an order compelling his former wife to return to their matrimonial home, alleging that he dissolved the marriage under pressure.
Musa, 40, told the court sitting in Magajin Gari that although he issued a divorce pronouncement to his ex-wife, Hauwa, he later sought to revoke it before the expiration of her waiting period, known in Islamic law as iddah.
According to him, his attempt to reconcile and restore the marriage was unsuccessful as the woman declined to return.
He informed the court that the divorce was not made willingly, insisting that he acted under duress when he signed the divorce documents.
Musa further accused his former wife of leaving their home with several household items and personal belongings after the separation.
The items, he claimed, included a television set, a gas cylinder, an electric kettle, two caps and some documents belonging to his late father.
He urged the court to direct her to return both the items and the documents.
Responding to the allegations, Hauwa maintained that her former husband's attempt to reconcile came only after she had completed her iddah period.
She admitted taking the television and gas cylinder but argued that she retained them because Musa was indebted to her.
According to her, the businessman owes her N31,500, and she intends to keep the items until the debt is settled.
Hauwa also told the court that the electric kettle was a gift given to her during their courtship and therefore remained her property.
She, however, denied having knowledge of the whereabouts of the caps and the documents allegedly belonging to Musa's father.
After listening to both parties, the presiding judge, Murtala Nasir, adjourned the matter for further hearing.
The judge also advised the petitioner to conduct a thorough search for the missing documents while the case continues.
