Tragedy struck in Ikhehe community, Ewato, in Esan South-East Local Government Area of Edo State, after a 30-year-old man, Pere Odese, allegedly hacked his father to death during an argument over food before he was lynched by an angry mob.
The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, reportedly threw the agrarian community into confusion as residents grappled with the shocking development.
According to sources in the area, the deceased farmer, identified as Friday Odese, was attacked by his son after informing him that there was no food at home.
Residents disclosed that the father explained he had been unable to access his farm to harvest cassava because of insecurity and the activities of armed men operating within the forests around the community.
The explanation was said to have sparked a heated argument between both men, during which the suspect allegedly picked up a cutlass and attacked his father.
A neighbour who reportedly attempted to rescue the victim was also said to have sustained severe machete injuries and was rushed to a hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
Angered by the killing, some residents reportedly pursued the suspect as he attempted to flee the scene and eventually lynched him.
The incident left both father and son dead.
Efforts to restore calm were said to have commenced shortly after the attack as tension spread across the community.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Moses Yamu, said the matter had yet to be officially reported to the police.
