The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a suspected armed robber in Akure and recovered a locally made pistol in what authorities described as a breakthrough in ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the state.
The suspect, identified as Idowu Babayemi of Abusoro Street, Akure, was apprehended by operatives following credible intelligence on his alleged involvement in armed robbery activities within the area.
According to a statement issued by the Command, the operation was carried out under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal.
The police said the arrest followed intelligence received in May 2026, prompting discreet surveillance on the suspect as part of an intelligence-driven policing strategy.
The suspect was, however, intercepted on May 7 during a routine patrol by operatives around the Onimalu area in Akure. A search conducted on him reportedly led to the recovery of a locally made pistol concealed in his possession.
The Command said the operation underscored its commitment to proactive policing, aimed at preventing crime, reducing illegal possession of firearms and strengthening public safety across Ondo State.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police commended the operatives for what he described as professionalism, vigilance and dedication to duty, noting that the success reflected the Command’s sustained pressure on criminal elements in the state.
He reaffirmed the Command’s resolve to intensify operations against armed robbery and other violent crimes, assuring residents of continued efforts to safeguard lives and property.
The Commissioner also appreciated the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his support and leadership in enhancing intelligence-led and tactical policing across the country.
The Command said investigations into the case were ongoing, adding that the suspect would be charged to court upon completion of inquiries.
Meanwhile, the police urged residents to continue supporting security agencies with timely and credible information, assuring that confidentiality would be maintained.
