The Accord Party has alleged that the killing of Kolade Eluyera, son of its woman leader in Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, was politically motivated and aimed at silencing his mother.
Eluyera was reportedly killed on Friday near Onireke Mosque in Ikire, an incident the party described as “gruesome and barbaric.”
In a statement issued on Monday, the National Chairman of the party, Maxwell Mgbuden, condemned the killing and called for urgent action by security agencies to apprehend those responsible.
He alleged that the deceased was targeted because of his mother’s political affiliation, describing the act as an attack on democratic freedom and association.
“It is outrageous that a young man was murdered to silence his mother, a popular Accord woman leader,” Mgbuden said.
He added that Eluyera’s death had left the party in deep mourning, stressing that his only “offence” was his family’s involvement in legitimate political activities.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and we pray God grants them strength during this painful period,” he said.
Mgbuden described the killing as a “painful sacrifice” in what he termed the struggle for a better Osun State, while urging security agencies to ensure that both the perpetrators and their alleged sponsors are brought to justice.
He called on law enforcement authorities to intensify surveillance, especially during the election period, warning that rising political tensions could undermine peace in the state.
According to him, there have also been reports of destruction of campaign materials and billboards belonging to opposition parties, which he attributed to suspected political thugs.
“Security agencies must sit up and discharge their statutory responsibilities to prevent further violence and political destabilisation,” he stated.
The Accord Party chairman also reiterated the party’s rejection of violence and intimidation in politics, insisting that it would resist any attempt to destabilise the state through unlawful means.
He further claimed that the opposition in the state was uncomfortable with the growing acceptance of the Accord Party among residents.
Mgbuden also commended Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, describing him as a “servant-leader” committed to delivering democratic dividends despite alleged challenges and sabotage.
He expressed the party’s support for Adeleke’s re-election bid, urging voters to embrace peaceful and issue-based politics ahead of future elections.
“Osun people must protect their votes and reject violence-driven politics. Democracy can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace and fairness,” he added.
