The Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed July 2 for the continuation of hearing in a suit filed against British Airways by a Nigerian passenger, Amechi Michael, over the alleged disappearance of his carry-on luggage.
The plaintiff is seeking redress over the alleged loss of the bag during a delayed boarding process involving the airline.
At the resumed hearing on Thursday, Michael was cross-examined by counsel to British Airways, John Godwin.
During proceedings, the plaintiff told the court that he reported the incident to the airline’s customer care unit shortly after discovering that his luggage was missing.
He explained that the matter was later referred to the United Kingdom-based Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution for arbitration.
According to Michael, the arbitrator ruled in his favour on the issue relating to the delayed flight but failed to address the alleged disappearance of his carry-on luggage.
He stated that he rejected the arbitral award because it did not resolve the main issue concerning the missing bag.
Michael subsequently approached the Federal High Court in Abuja, accusing the airline of negligence and breach of duty of care.
The plaintiff argued that the airline was responsible for safeguarding the luggage after a cabin crew member allegedly requested that it be handed over for safekeeping during boarding.
Counsel to the plaintiff, Abiola Olaitan, later informed the court of her decision to close her client’s case.
Following the submission, Justice Obiora Egwuatu adjourned the matter until July 2 for the defence to open its case and for continuation of trial.
The suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/1293/2025, centres on the plaintiff’s demand for the recovery of the allegedly missing luggage and damages arising from the incident.
