A 49-year-old Brazilian bricklayer, Edimar Rocha Martins, has been left stranded after spending his entire salary travelling about 1,300 miles to meet a woman he fell in love with online, only to discover that she was an artificial intelligence-generated personality.
Martins, who had hoped to begin a new life with the woman, identified on social media as Jéssica Oliveira, also known as Jessica Fazendeira, travelled from Imperatriz in northern Brazil to Belo Horizonte after being promised accommodation and financial support.
According to The US Sun, the woman’s online profile attracted more than 300,000 followers, with videos portraying her as a glamorous blonde living on a farm. She reportedly encouraged men to leave their existing lives behind and join her in the countryside.
Martins, who had been struggling with loneliness following his mother’s death, said he believed the relationship offered him an opportunity to find happiness.
“I came in search of happiness,” he said before embarking on the journey on October 9.
After enduring a 36-hour bus journey, he arrived in Belo Horizonte on October 11 and began searching for the woman. Armed with her photographs, he approached people on the streets, asking whether they recognised her, but nobody could identify her.
His search eventually led him to realise that the woman he had travelled hundreds of miles to meet was not a real person but an AI-generated creation.
“I had already walked around with several photos, showing them and asking if anyone knew this person, and everyone said no, so I felt deceived,” Martins said.
He added, “Sometimes, loneliness at home ends up causing a lot of trouble in a person’s life.”
With his earnings exhausted and little money left for basic needs, Martins sought assistance from a municipal service supporting migrants in Belo Horizonte. Officials provided him with food, access to bathing facilities and guidance on avoiding online scams.
The authorities also arranged a bus ticket for him to leave the city on October 13. Rather than return to Imperatriz, he decided to travel to Tocantins, the state where he was born, while expressing hope of visiting Belo Horizonte again under different circumstances.
The report added that Martins was the third man in less than six months to travel to Belo Horizonte hoping to meet a woman who turned out to be an AI-generated personality, raising concerns about the emotional and financial consequences of deceptive online relationships.
