No fewer than 17 members of the House of Representatives have dumped the African Democratic Congress for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, in a fresh wave of defections that has further unsettled the opposition party.
The Speaker of the House, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the development during plenary on Tuesday.
Also announced was the defection of Leke Abejide, who moved from the ADC to the All Progressives Congress.
Lawmakers who joined the NDC include Yusuf Datti, Uchenna Okonkwo, Adamu Wakili, Thaddeus Attah, George Ozodinobi, Lilian Orogbu, Oluwaseyi Sowunmi, Peter Aniekwe, Mukhtar Zakari, George Oluwande and Munachim Umezuruike.
Others are Emeka Idu, Jesse Onuakalusi, Ifeanyi Uzokwe, Afam Ogene and Abdulhakeem Ado.
The mass defection comes barely 24 hours after former presidential candidates, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, exited the ADC for the NDC.
Both politicians had said their decision was aimed at strengthening a new political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The latest development signals a growing realignment within Nigeria’s opposition landscape, with the NDC emerging as a rallying point for defecting politicians.
