The Ondo State Police Command has assured residents of adequate security before, during and after the forthcoming bye-election in the state, saying strategic measures have already been activated to guarantee a peaceful electoral process.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Adebowale Lawal, gave the assurance during a meeting with the Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Ondo State, Dr Mutiu Agboke, at the command headquarters in Akure.
The police boss said the command had commenced operational planning aimed at ensuring maximum security across affected constituencies ahead of the poll.
According to him, security personnel would be deployed to polling units, collation centres and other sensitive locations linked to the electoral exercise.
Lawal stated that the command would provide protection for INEC officials, ad hoc staff, voters and electoral materials throughout the election period.
He added that the police would intensify intelligence gathering, visibility policing and strategic patrols to prevent any breakdown of law and order before, during and after the election.
The CP also called on political parties, candidates and their supporters to conduct themselves peacefully and comply with electoral laws.
He assured residents that the police remained committed to safeguarding lives and property and ensuring that voters exercise their civic rights without intimidation or fear.
Speaking during the visit, the REC commended the police command for its proactive security preparations and ongoing collaboration with the electoral body.
Agboke expressed confidence in the existing partnership between INEC and security agencies, noting that efforts were ongoing to ensure a transparent, credible and violence-free bye-election in the state.
He also reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to fairness, neutrality and professionalism throughout the electoral process.
Lawal further appreciated Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for supporting security operations in the state, while also commending the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, for providing leadership and strategic direction for election security nationwide.
