Panic gripped residents of the Ede area of Osun State after two undergraduates were reportedly killed during a violent cult-related attack on an off-campus residence.
The incident, which occurred late Tuesday, also left several other students nursing injuries after suspected cult members allegedly stormed the apartment occupied by the victims.
Sources in the community disclosed that the attackers invaded the residence where about six students were gathered and unleashed violence on them with dangerous weapons.
A security source familiar with the development said the assault was believed to be connected to an ongoing supremacy battle between rival cult groups in the area.
According to the source, the attackers reportedly targeted a member of an opposing confraternity before attacking others found in the apartment.
“The incident happened at night. The assailants forced their way into the building and attacked the occupants. Some of the victims sustained serious injuries, while two later died,” the source said.
The injured students were said to have been rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment.
Meanwhile, an anti-cultism monitoring group, Naija Confra, claimed the attack involved suspected members of the Aye confraternity and rival Buccaneer members.
The group alleged that one of the targeted persons, identified simply as Dara, was among those attacked during the invasion.
It further claimed that two victims lost their lives in the clash, while others, including some alleged cult leaders, were critically injured.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command had commenced an investigation into the matter.
Ojelabi, however, stated that police records confirmed one death from the clash.
“There was a cult-related clash on Tuesday and one person was confirmed dead. Investigation is currently ongoing,” he said.
The latest incident has again raised concerns over rising cult activities in parts of Osun State.
Recall that police authorities had earlier arrested suspected cult members in connection with violent clashes in the Ilesa area earlier this year.
