UNIBEN part-time student shot dead near campus gate

A part-time student of the University of Benin has been reportedly shot dead near the main gate of the institution’s Ugbowo campus in Edo State.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, threw residents and students around the area into panic as details surrounding the killing remained unclear as of the time of filing this report.

A viral video circulating on social media captured the aftermath of the attack, showing the victim inside a vehicle after he was allegedly shot by unidentified assailants.

Sources claimed the deceased had just finished his semester examinations before the incident occurred, although the claim had yet to be officially verified.

Reacting to the development, the management of the University of Benin dissociated the institution from the circumstances surrounding the killing, describing it as an incident that happened outside the campus environment.

The university, in a statement, suggested that the attack might be linked to suspected cult-related activities.

The management expressed sympathy over the incident and urged students and staff members to remain calm, vigilant and security conscious while going about their academic activities.

It also reassured members of the university community of its commitment to maintaining safety and order within the institution.

Efforts to get an official reaction from the Edo State Police Command were unsuccessful as the command had yet to issue a statement on the incident as of press time.
