19-year-old boy allegedly tortured to death over missing ₦17,000

Residents of Amoka Village in Nru, Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, have been thrown into mourning following the death of a 19-year-old boy, Chiadikaobi Asadu, under circumstances that have sparked outrage and demands for justice.

As reported by Vanguard, the incident has continued to generate tension within the community, with allegations that the teenager died after being subjected to severe punishment by members of his family over a missing ₦17,000.

Community sources told reporters that the deceased was accused of taking money belonging to his father with the intention of purchasing a mobile phone. 

Despite reportedly denying the allegation, he was allegedly beaten by his father.

Witnesses claimed that the matter escalated when some male relatives were invited to intervene. 

The teenager was allegedly taken to an isolated location, tied to a tree and flogged repeatedly for several hours.

According to residents, he was later released and instructed to take a bath. However, concern arose when he failed to respond after entering the bathroom. Family members reportedly forced the door open and found him unconscious. He was subsequently confirmed dead.

Sources within the community further alleged that attempts were made to conceal the circumstances surrounding the death.

The teenager was reportedly buried the same day, while claims circulated that he had slipped and fallen in the bathroom after taking medication.

The situation took another twist when security personnel arrived in the community the following day. Residents alleged that the victim’s father accused some local youths of being responsible for the death, leading to several arrests.

The arrests reportedly heightened tensions in the area and attracted the attention of military personnel, who were said to have advised the police to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the matter.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities had yet to release an official statement on the incident. Meanwhile, residents have continued to call for a transparent probe to establish the true cause of the teenager’s death and ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice.
