A Professor of Computer Science at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Alaba Akingbesote, is set to explore the economic opportunities and challenges associated with Artificial Intelligence-powered online marketplaces at the institution’s 66th Inaugural Lecture.
The lecture, titled “From Traditional Markets to Bidirectional AI-Cloud E-Marketplaces: Emergence, Challenges and Expectations,” is scheduled to hold on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, at the university’s Multipurpose Hall.
A statement issued by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) and Chairman of the Ceremonies Committee, Prof. Adebisi Daramola, said the event would commence at 2 p.m., with the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olugbenga Ige, presiding over the occasion.
According to the statement, Akingbesote will examine the transition from conventional market systems to digital trading platforms powered by artificial intelligence and cloud technologies, while highlighting the opportunities and regulatory concerns shaping the future of electronic commerce.
The professor, an expert in AI and e-market services, began his academic journey with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Ogun State University, Ago-Iwoye, in 1994. He later obtained a Master of Technology degree in Computer Science from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, in 2004 and earned a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Zululand, South Africa, in 2015.
Akingbesote joined AAUA in 1995 as a Graduate Assistant when the institution operated as Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti. Through years of teaching, research and academic service, he rose through the ranks and attained the position of professor in 2020.
Beyond academics, he has occupied several leadership positions within the university, including Acting Director of the Centre for Distance Learning and Acting Head of the Department of Computer Science. He also served as a departmental staff adviser and examination officer.
The scholar has authored two textbooks and published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals.
He has also presented research papers at conferences in several countries, including the United Kingdom, South Africa, Ghana, Mauritius, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Tunisia and the United Arab Emirates.
His contributions to the field of computing have earned him recognition both locally and internationally. Among his honours are the Best Paper Presenter Award in Cloud Computing at the IEEE 6th International Conference on Adaptive Science and Technology in 2014 and the second prize for Best PhD Oral Presentation at the University of Zululand’s Faculty of Science and Agriculture Symposium in 2012.
Akingbesote has also served as an Adjunct Lecturer at Achievers University, Owo, and as an External Examiner in the Department of Software Engineering at FUTA.
He is a member of the Association for Computing Machinery and has continued to advocate the use of emerging technologies to promote societal and economic development.
The university said the inaugural lecture is expected to provide fresh insights into the growing role of AI-cloud technologies in commerce, as well as the opportunities and challenges confronting digital marketplaces in an increasingly technology-driven world.
