The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the candidate of the All Progressives Congress and incumbent Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, winner of Saturday’s governorship election.
The declaration was made in the early hours of Sunday by the state Returning Officer, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, at the state collation centre in Ado-Ekiti.
Announcing the final result, Oladiji said Oyebanji met all constitutional requirements and was duly returned elected after securing the highest number of valid votes cast in the poll.
According to the official results, the APC candidate garnered 319,224 votes to defeat his closest challengers, Olumayokun Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party, who polled 40,533 votes, and Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress, who secured 12,872 votes.
INEC disclosed that 988,251 voters were registered for the election, while 384,940 were accredited. A total of 382,109 votes were cast, with 375,777 recognised as valid votes.
The results showed that Oyebanji dominated the election across the state’s 16 local government areas, recording victories in all councils.
The APC candidate also triumphed in Efon Local Government Area, the home council of PDP flag bearer Oluyede.
In Efon, the APC polled 8,742 votes against the PDP’s 2,051 votes, while the ADC secured 201 votes.
Similar outcomes were recorded across other local governments, including Ado, Irepodun/Ifelodun, Ikole, Moba, Oye and Ekiti East, where the APC maintained commanding leads.
Veracity News reports that the victory grants Oyebanji another four-year mandate to continue leading the state, following a landslide performance that further strengthened the APC’s political hold on Ekiti State.
