The media office of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has launched a fresh attack on former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, accusing him of distorting facts about Atiku's stance on insecurity and attempting to rewrite recent political events.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Atiku's spokesman, Paul Ibe, the former vice president's camp dismissed allegations credited to Lawal and insisted that Atiku had consistently condemned terrorist attacks, banditry and kidnappings across the country while proposing measures to tackle the security crisis.
The statement accused the former SGF of resorting to personal attacks rather than addressing allegations surrounding his reported involvement in activities linked to the African Democratic Congress presidential primary process.
According to the Atiku camp, the former vice president, who is the ADC's presidential candidate for the 2027 election, has repeatedly spoken against violent attacks in states affected by insurgency and banditry, including Benue, Plateau, Borno and Kaduna.
The statement maintained that despite his Fulani background and roots in Adamawa State, Atiku had never hesitated to condemn killings and attacks carried out by criminal elements across the country.
It further noted that Atiku had consistently criticised successive governments over what he described as weaknesses in Nigeria's security architecture and had called for more decisive action to address insecurity.
The media office also highlighted several proposals advanced by the former vice president, including reforms to the nation's counterterrorism strategy, legislative backing for state-backed security outfits, improved intelligence gathering at the community level and enhanced support for victims of violence.
According to the statement, Atiku had advocated the establishment of a National Victims and Survivors Support Framework to provide psychological assistance, educational opportunities and economic recovery programmes for communities affected by terrorism and banditry.
The statement added that the former vice president recently proposed the creation of special courts for terrorism-related offences and recommended capital punishment for convicted terrorists.
To support its claims, the Atiku Media Office cited several previous public statements and media reports in which the former vice president condemned attacks by insurgents and bandits and urged stronger action by the Federal Government.
