Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress, citing alleged irregularities in the party's recently concluded primary elections.
Lawal announced his decision in a statement issued on Monday, saying the conduct of the primaries had eroded his confidence in the party's internal democratic process.
The former SGF alleged that the exercise was manipulated in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and his loyalists, claiming that some candidates who emerged victorious were replaced with preferred contenders.
According to him, the outcome of the primaries influenced his decision to leave the party.
"I am exiting the ADC because its just concluded primaries were, at all levels, massively rigged in favour of Atiku Abubakar," Lawal stated.
He further alleged that election results were altered in some instances and that the process failed to reflect the will of party members.
The former SGF said he could not remain in a political platform where, according to him, deserving candidates were denied victory through what he described as manipulation of the electoral process.
Lawal also declared that he would oppose Atiku's presidential ambition ahead of the 2027 general elections, arguing that supporting the former vice president would not be in the country's best interest.
He maintained that he would continue consultations with political associates and like-minded stakeholders on the future political direction he intends to pursue.
The former SGF, however, did not disclose whether he would be joining another political party following his departure from the ADC.
His resignation comes amid heightened political realignments and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections, with several parties and political actors repositioning for the contest.
As of the time of filing this report, the ADC had yet to issue an official response to the allegations raised by Lawal.
