A video circulating on social media has triggered fresh concern over Nigeria's security challenges after it allegedly showed suspected bandits displaying large sums of money believed to have been collected from kidnapping victims as ransom.
The footage, which surfaced online on Saturday, was shared by conflict reporter Bakatsine, who covers insecurity in the North-West, with the claim that the cash was proceeds from ransom payments made to secure the release of abducted victims.
Sharing the video on his X handle, the journalist wrote, "This video shows bandits flaunting money obtained through ransom payments. May Allah bring an end to this tragedy and grant Nigeria lasting peace."
Although the authenticity of the video has not been independently verified, it has generated widespread reactions on social media, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the activities of criminal gangs operating across parts of the country.
Kidnapping for ransom has remained one of the country's most persistent security threats, particularly in the North-West and parts of the North-Central, where armed groups frequently target travellers, farming communities, schools and rural settlements.
Despite repeated military offensives and security operations against armed groups, incidents of abduction and violent attacks continue to be reported in several states, raising concerns over the effectiveness of ongoing counter-banditry efforts.
The viral clip has further renewed public debate on the growing influence of criminal gangs and the financial incentives driving kidnapping across affected regions.
Authorities had yet to officially react to the video as of the time of filing this report.
