The presidential candidate of the Action Democratic Party for the 2027 general elections, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, has said that democracy can only be meaningful when it translates into improved living conditions, security, justice and economic opportunities for citizens.
Abbas stated this in a Democracy Day message issued on Thursday, where he congratulated Nigerians on the commemoration of June 12 and reflected on the country's democratic journey.
The ADP presidential aspirant described June 12 as a symbol of courage, resilience and the determination of Nigerians to uphold democratic values, noting that the date remains a significant reminder of the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists in the struggle for civil rule.
According to him, democracy should extend beyond the conduct of periodic elections and must be measured by its ability to address the needs and aspirations of the people.
He said Nigerians deserve a system that guarantees security, prosperity, justice, quality education, affordable healthcare, reliable electricity supply and economic opportunities regardless of ethnic, religious or social background.
"Democracy must go beyond periodic elections. It must deliver security, prosperity, justice, quality education, affordable healthcare, reliable electricity and economic opportunities for every Nigerian," Abbas said.
He noted that despite the country's democratic gains over the years, many citizens still grapple with insecurity, unemployment, poverty, inadequate infrastructure and rising cost of living.
The presidential hopeful also expressed concern over the limited opportunities available to young people and women, stressing the need for policies that promote inclusion and sustainable development.
Abbas said Nigeria possesses enormous human and natural resources capable of driving national growth, but stressed that visionary leadership, accountable governance and national unity remain critical to unlocking the country's full potential.
He urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain actively involved in the democratic process, saying the future of the country depends on citizens' participation and commitment to good governance.
"The future of our nation depends on our collective participation, vigilance and determination to build a better Nigeria," he said.
He called on Nigerians to renew their faith in the country and work collectively towards building a safer, stronger and more prosperous nation.
Abbas added that a society where merit is rewarded and public service is driven by the interest of the people remains achievable through collective effort and responsible leadership.
