Former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Timi Frank, on Monday alleged that there was a fresh move to prevent the African Democratic Congress from participating in the 2027 general election.
Frank claimed that the alleged plan, involving the Presidency, the Independent National Electoral Commission and some members of the judiciary, was aimed at ensuring that the ADC and its expected presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, do not appear on the ballot.
In a statement issued on Monday, the former APC spokesman warned that excluding the opposition party from the election would undermine Nigeria's democracy and could trigger political unrest across the country.
He alleged that while the Nigeria Democratic Congress appeared to be at the centre of recent legal disputes, it was only being used as a distraction, insisting that the real target of the alleged plot was the ADC.
"We have been reliably informed of a fresh plot to use the judiciary and INEC to remove the ADC from the ballot come 2027. The ultimate objective is to ensure that the ADC and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, do not participate in the election," Frank said.
The political activist, who also serves as the United Liberation Movement for West Papua Ambassador to East Africa and the Middle East, claimed that the information came from a senior source within the Presidency.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, alleging that efforts were being made to weaken opposition parties and pave the way for electoral manipulation.
Frank also appealed to the international community, particularly the United States Government, to monitor developments closely, alleging that state institutions were being deployed against opposition parties.
He cautioned INEC and the judiciary against compromising the electoral process, warning that they would be held accountable for actions capable of undermining democracy.
He further called on opposition leaders, civil society organisations and other democratic stakeholders to unite in defence of the nation's democracy, stressing that failure to resist any attempt to establish a one-party state could have serious consequences for Nigeria's democratic future.
