The Federal Government has declared Friday a public holiday to mark this year's Democracy Day and celebrate Nigeria's 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
The declaration was announced on Thursday in Abuja through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the statement, the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed the administration's commitment to sustaining democratic principles, including the rule of law, transparency, accountability and inclusive governance across the country.
He also assured Nigerians that the ministry, in partnership with relevant security agencies, would continue to implement measures aimed at strengthening internal security and maintaining stability nationwide.
The minister stressed that a peaceful and secure environment remained critical to democratic growth and national development.
He urged citizens to use the occasion for reflection on their civic responsibilities and the importance of supporting democratic institutions.
"As we mark this historic day, every Nigerian is encouraged to remain law-abiding, uphold the institutions that sustain our democracy, and remember that the strength of any democracy lies ultimately in the character of its citizens," he said.
Tunji-Ojo further described June 12 as a landmark date in Nigeria's democratic journey, noting that it honours the courage, sacrifices and resilience of Nigerians whose struggles paved the way for democratic rule.
"Their legacies continue to inform the values and responsibilities of the Nigerian state," he added.
Democracy Day is celebrated annually on June 12 in remembrance of the country's democratic struggle and the restoration of civilian rule.
The holiday provides an opportunity for citizens to reflect on Nigeria's democratic progress and national development.
