A 10-year-old child has been hospitalised after a fire gutted the apartment of a Nigerian family residing in Plymouth, leaving them homeless and destroying all their belongings.
The affected family, identified as the Baloguns, reportedly lost everything in the blaze, including clothing, travel documents, and other essential personal items.
Members of the Nigerian community in the United Kingdom have since launched a support appeal to assist the family in recovering from the incident.
According to a post shared on X (formerly Twitter) by a former president of the NiUK community, Benjamin Kuti, the fire left the family in a critical situation, with the injured child currently receiving treatment in hospital while two other children have been temporarily accommodated by friends.
Kuti disclosed that the family’s entire possessions were consumed by the inferno, leaving them without basic necessities.
He described the situation as distressing and called for urgent assistance from the Nigerian community and well-meaning individuals.
“The family has lost everything, including passports, important documents, clothing and personal belongings,” he stated, adding that the affected household is currently relying entirely on public goodwill for survival and recovery.
He further noted that the family is not eligible for public funds, making community intervention even more crucial at this time.
As part of ongoing efforts, a fundraising campaign has been launched to support accommodation, childcare, clothing replacement, and other urgent needs arising from the fire outbreak.
A GoFundMe appeal organised by a family associate, Temi, confirmed that the victims are currently struggling to stabilise their lives after the devastating loss.
The appeal emphasised that donations would go towards temporary shelter, food, clothing, and essential household items as the family works towards rebuilding their lives.
Organisers also stressed that no family should endure such tragedy alone, urging members of the public to contribute generously.
As of the time of filing this report, £1,703 has been raised out of a £5,500 target.
