The United Kingdom-based Nigerian singer and songwriter, Talay Riley, has died after he was reportedly stabbed in a violent attack in East London.
The award-winning artiste, born Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was 35 years old at the time of his death.
According to reports by local media outlet Newham Recorder, the incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Friday on Pankhurst Avenue in Silvertown, a district in East London.
Emergency responders were said to have been quickly deployed to the scene following distress calls. Paramedics made efforts to save the victim, but he was confirmed dead shortly after.
Metropolitan Police homicide detectives from the Specialist Crime Command have since launched a full-scale murder investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.
In a statement released by the family, they expressed deep grief over the sudden and tragic loss.
“It is with overwhelming sadness that we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, professionally known as Talay Riley, passed away yesterday morning,” the family said.
They described him as a highly talented musician and songwriter, widely recognised for his success in the music industry, including Grammy recognition and multi-platinum songwriting achievements.
Beyond his public achievements, the family remembered him as a warm and generous individual with a strong sense of humour and a memorable personality.
“For those who knew and loved him personally, it is his humour, generous spirit and unmistakable presence that will be missed the most,” the statement added.
The family also thanked supporters and members of the public for the outpouring of sympathy and tributes since news of the incident broke.
Authorities in London are continuing investigations as they work to determine the motive behind the fatal stabbing.
