A housewife, Umma Bashir, has approached a Sharia Court in Kaduna State, accusing her husband of renting out her bedroom without her knowledge and leaving her with inadequate accommodation.
The woman told Sharia Court II sitting in the Magajin Gari area of Kaduna that her husband, Bashir Ibrahim, allocated two rooms to her and her two children but later rented out one of the rooms without her consent.
According to her, she discovered the development after returning from a five-day visit to her parents.
She alleged that upon her return, she found her bedroom locked and her personal belongings moved to the sitting room.
The complainant said efforts to seek an explanation from her husband yielded little result, as he insisted that he had the right to make decisions concerning the property.
Bashir further told the court that she would not return to the matrimonial home until suitable accommodation was provided for her and her children.
She also claimed that her two co-wives each occupied separate two-bedroom apartments with their children, while she had been left to manage a single room.
Responding to the allegations, Ibrahim admitted renting out one of the rooms but denied acting without informing his wife.
He told the court that the decision was aimed at generating funds to renovate another apartment he intended to move her into.
According to him, the proceeds from the rent would be used to improve the proposed accommodation for his wife and children.
After listening to both parties, the presiding judge, Malam Musa Sa’ad, stressed that providing adequate shelter remains one of the responsibilities of a husband.
The judge observed that it was inappropriate for a couple and their two teenage children to live in a single room.
Sa’ad subsequently adjourned the matter to enable the court inspect the residence and assess its condition before making a decision.Alternative Headlines
